Port Blair on South Andaman Island is the capital city of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, an Indian territory in the Bay of Bengal. Its seafront Cellular Jail, completed in 1906, hints at its past as a British penal colony and is now a memorial to Indian independence activists. Kanpur is a large industrial city on the banks of the Ganges River, in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. On its northern outskirts, Kanpur Zoological Park features orangutans and tigers. Kanpur gained center stage during the colonial era when it was transferred by the Nawab of Awadh to the British. The city witnessed the Massacre of Kanpur during the Indian Independence struggle. The place was first known as Karnapur, and during the course of the journey, the name became Kanpur. Another legend has it that it was originally known as Kanhaiyapur after Lord Krishna , and over a period of time, it got its present name.
