Port Blair on South Andaman Island is the capital city of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, an Indian territory in the Bay of Bengal. Its seafront Cellular Jail, completed in 1906, hints at its past as a British penal colony and is now a memorial to Indian independence activists. Surrounded by tropical forest and rugged coastline, lively Port Blair serves as the provincial capital of the Andamans. It’s a vibrant mix of Indian Ocean inhabitants – Bengalis, Tamils, Telugus, Nicobarese and Burmese. A historic city founded by king Surajesan, Gwalior is galore with beautiful monuments, palaces and temples, giving this city a majestic charm which speaks volumes of its glorious past. Famous for its dramatic and dominant hilltop fort, which Mughal emperor Babur reputedly described as the pearl of Indian fortresses, Gwalior makes an interesting stop en route to some of the better-known destinations in this part of India. Within the fort’s high walls is the 15th-century Gujari Mahal Palace, now an archaeological museum. Gwalior is also the birthplace of former Indian Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, music maestro Amjad Ali Khan and the famous percussionist Alla Rakha.
The Gwalior fort, which gives a panoramic view of the entire city, the Jai Vilas palace and the Sun Temple are few of the tourist spots in Gwalior that cannot be missed.
Nice to know - Every year, in the month of November/December, a four-day Tansen Music festival is celebrated in the city and it sees various classical musicians from all over the country performing on the stage near the tomb itself.
