Wedged between the high Himalaya and the steamy Indian plains, Nepal is a land of snow peaks and Sherpas, yaks and yetis, monasteries and mantras. The Kathmandu region is essentially a valley, surrounded by 4 prominent hills. The city boasts of a huge amount of temples and spiritual places, making it a rather serene experience for the traveller. Nestled at a height of 1400m above sea level, Kathmandu is the ideal place for the traveller looking for peace and beauty. A number of earthquakes over the years have shaken the city, most recently in 2015. However, to its credit, the city has been able to build itself back up, rebuilding it's monasteries, temples and it's durbars for the hordes of tourists travelling here every year. Further south lie Nepal’s wild and woolly national parks, where nature buffs scan the treetops for exotic bird species and comb the jungles for rhinos, tigers and myriad birdlife.
Nice to know - The Nepal flag is the only national flag that is not quadrilateral in shape. It is made of two triangles. The triangles are said to represent Hinduism and Buddhism. They also represent the Himalayan Mountains.
Things to see
Best time to visit - September - November is the best time to visit Kathmandu
Once identified as the summer capital of Bihar, Ranchi was also known to be a hill station during the British rule owing to its altitude of 2140 feet, umpteen waterfalls plummeting from pretty hills and the ever so pretty winding rivulets. The city is now the state capital of mineral-rich state Jharkhand and takes immense pride in accounting for the 40 percent of the country?s total mineral reserves. Other than this, the city is bestowed with emerald green forests adding to the natural serenity, tranquillity and nature?s bliss. There’s little of interest here for travellers, but the city acts as a gateway to Betla (Palamau) National Park, and there are numerous waterfalls you can visit in the surrounding countryside. The region is known for its tribal heritage, and exhibits at the Tribal Museum include musical instruments and jewelry from the state’s many tribes.
Nice to know - Ranchi is the capital of the Indian state of Jharkhand, and is the 3rd most populous city of the state.
Things to do
Jul-Mar is the best time to visit Ranchi
Ranchi has sub-tropical climate i.e, extremely hot in summers and cool in winters. Though Ranchi can be visited anytime during the year, the number of tourists drop in May-June due to the extreme heat in the region.
