First Kinnar Akhada at Ardh Kumbh Mela 2019

Kinnar akhada at Kumbh mela 2019

Kinnar - the Hindi word for transgender has now reached a milestone in terms of being accepted in the society. The Ardh kumbh mela being organised at Prayagraj in 2019, is going to witness the participation from first Kinnar akhada ever.

The ardh kumbh mela attracts the attention from crores of devotees residing in different parts of the country as well as from the ones who have settled abroad. As per the Hindu mythology, it is said that when Jupiter is in the Aries or the Taurus, the two among the twelve zodiac sun signs and Sun and Moon reside with the Capricon in the Month of Magha which is February, this Triveni sangam makes Prayagraj the land which blesses the devotees who come and take a dip in the confluence of the holy rivers.

The kinnar akhada is the religious movement started by famous tattooed transgender Laxmi Narayan Tripathi who is among the influential leaders of LGBT community.

When asked about having the permission granted for the upcoming kumbh mela festival which has been going on for about two years now, the head priest says they are thrilled to be a part of the mela. It is expected that 150 million devotees will be attending the ardh kumbh mela in 2019 over the period of almost two months, which has already begun now.

The kinnar akhada became the first transgender group to bathe in the holy waters of the Triveni Sangam at Allahabad, today’s Prayagraj on the very first day of the commencement of the Ardh Kumbh mela 2019 on 15th January. The mela is going to last till day of Maha Shivratri which will be celebrated on 4th of March 2019. The mela attracts most of the hindu devotees from all over the country as well as from the other parts of the world.

The kinnar or also known as hijra’s have been blessed by The Lord-king Ram during the period of his reign when he came back after completing the period of his exile. It is said that when Shri Ram was leaving the city of Ayodhya, almost the entire kingdom of his followed him to the forest and came back when eagerly requested by Lord Ram himself. When he came back after a period of 14 years, the Kinnar’s were waiting for him at the same place and being delighted by this form of love and respect, King Ram invoked them with the power to curse and bless the human beings.

The path of acceptance in our stubborn society has been tough for the transgender community. However, the head priest says they are here to shower love on all races of human kind irrespective of cast and creed. This kinnar akhada at the ardh kumbh mela is the 14th religious order or akhada apart from the other 13 at the banks of Holy Ganga.

Apart from the confluence of the holy rivers on the lands of modern day Allahabad aka Pragaraj, there are several other attractions which adds to the number of reasons why anyone should visit and witness the authenticity of Hindu religion which is still preserved years after technology has taken over the tradition.
