Kinnar - the Hindi word for transgender has now reached a milestone in terms of being accepted in the society. The Ardh kumbh mela being organised at Prayagraj in 2019, is going to witness the participation from first Kinnar akhada ever.

It is expected that 150 million devotees will be attending the ardh kumbh mela in 2019 over the period of almost two months, which has already begun now.

The kinnar akhada became the first transgender group to bathe in the holy waters of the Triveni Sangam at Allahabad, today’s Prayagraj on the very first day of the commencement of the Ardh Kumbh mela 2019 on 15^th January. The mela is going to last till day of Maha Shivratri which will be celebrated on 4^th of March 2019. The mela attracts most of the hindu devotees from all over the country as well as from the other parts of the world.

The kinnar or also known as hijra’s have been blessed by The Lord-king Ram during the period of his reign when he came back after completing the period of his exile. It is said that when Shri Ram was leaving the city of Ayodhya, almost the entire kingdom of his followed him to the forest and came back when eagerly requested by Lord Ram himself. When he came back after a period of 14 years, the Kinnar’s were waiting for him at the same place and being delighted by this form of love and respect, King Ram invoked them with the power to curse and bless the human beings.

This kinnar akhada at the ardh kumbh mela is the 14^th religious order or akhada apart from the other 13 at the banks of Holy Ganga.
