“Udey Deshka Aam Nagrik”(UDAN) is an initiative by Government of India to decrease the price of Air Tickets. It’s main motive is to connect the Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities of India at an affordable Air Flight rate to make flying accessible for every citizen of India so that anyone can fly from one part of the country to another at a cheaper rate.

This plan was introduced in October 2016 by the honourable prime minister of India and has been launched on April 2017. This yojna has a purpose to solve a problem that flight prices from one big city to a small city or a small city to small city are very high thus people don’t prefer to travel via flights. As an alternative people prefer trains which are cheaper in comparison to Flights. In this scenario, there are many Tier 2 and Tier 3 Airports are underutilised which is an alarming situation for the Government. So UDAN scheme was launched by the government to improve the travel sector of our country with the biggest objective to make Air Fare cheaper and utilize almost all of the underutilized Airports in India.

Basic Features of UDAN

Under the scheme, the fair expenses will be Rs 2,500 per hour from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. In an hour a flight covers almost 500 km which calculates the expenses as Rs5/km which is cheaper than a Sleeper class train charges.

Inside one flight almost 50% of seats will be reserved under UDAN Yojana.

The Airlines which became a part of the Yojana will have to run 3 flights per week and there should be at least 7 departures per week.
