Before Delhi, Kolkata (Calcutta) West Bengal was known as the Capital of India. So it was under an immense influence of the British rule and to leave there mark for generation after generation they built number of monuments and Fort William is one of it.

HISTORY:-
It is a fort built in Bengal during the early years of Bengal Presidency of British India. It’s one of Kolkata’s most enduring Raj-era edifices. This fort was named after King William III. As though there are two Fort William the original one was built in 1696 by British East India Company under the orders of Sir John Goldsborough and the other construction started in the bank of Hooghly River under the supervision of Sir Charles Eyre it was named after King William III in 1700.
The original building is two storied along with projecting wings. Rebuilding of the fort started by Robert Clive in the year 1758, after the Battle of Plassey (1757). After completing the construction Maidan became “the lungs of Kolkata”. Today Fort William is the property of Indian Army.

STRUCTURE:-
To build the Fort bricks have been used and mortar in the shape of an irregular octagon with an area 5 km². There are six gates: Chowringhee, Plassey, Calcutta, Water Gate, St Georges and the Treasury Gate. It extends over an area of 70.9 hectares.
The design is that of a star fort, suited to defence against cannon firing solid shot,and dates from before the advent of explosive shells.

LOCATION:-
Fort William is located in the bank of River Hooghly at the core of city of Joy (Kolkata, West Bengal) in front of Maidan.

DIRECTION:-
As though Fort William is the lungs of Kolkata so every route is easy to connect. To reach to Fort William many direct buses and cabs are available from Howrah station. Other than that even traveling by metro is convenient you just need to get down to Maidan and Fort William is at 11minuite walking distance from the metro.
