PRINSEP GHAT
Kolkata known to be the city of joy is also a mystery full of history regarding British era. When we talk about exploring monuments of Kolkata then
Prinsep Ghat should be at the top list beacause your trip to Kolkata would be incomplete if you miss this part of City of joy.
HISTORY:-
Prinsep ghat was made in the memory of eminent Anglo-Indian scholar and antiquary James Prinsep was designed by W. Fitzgerald and constructed in 1843. Prinsep Ghat is one of the oldest recreational spots of Kolkata. It is a beautiful antic design since British era.
Location:-
It is located between the Water Gate and the St George's Gate of the Fort William.
STRUCTURE:-
The monument is mostly influenced by the design of rich Greek and Gothic inlays. Above the monument there is a beautiful bridge which gives it a mesmerizing look all over. Inside prinsep ghat there are beautiful handmade art piece of grass.
It is 2-kilometre (1.2 mi) stretch of the beautified riverfront from Princep Ghat to Babughat (Baje Kadamtala Ghat) was inaugurated on 24 May 2012. It has illuminated and landscaped gardens and pathways, fountains, and renovated ghats.
EXTRAS:-
There is a railway station named after Prinsep ghat and the station is a part of Kolkata Circular Railway which is maintained by Eastern Railway. The station code is PPGT.
A jetty is also nearby this monument which is named as Man-O-War jetty, that belongs to the Kolkata Port Trust and commemorates the role played by the port in the Second World War. The jetty is mainly used by the Indian Navy.
One of the songs in the Bollywood film Parineeta was shot here on the ghats.
TRAVEL:-
To reach to Prinsep ghat is very easy metro is always available you need to get down to Maidan or Rabindra Sarober and buses along with cabs are always available.
So without any fail do not let yourself miss a visit to this beautiful monument of British era. And if you are a historic period lover then this is a must visit spot for you.
